Disney Characters to Representation in Media: Ariana DeBose's Stylist, Zadrian Smith, Shares Insights on 'Wish' Press Tour Outfits

Styling Ariana DeBose for her "Wish" Press Tour: A Monumental Collaboration

When it came to styling Ariana DeBose for her highly-anticipated "Wish" press tour, renowned stylist Zadrian Smith knew he had to ask the "very important questions." Collaborating with his business partner, Sarah Edmiston, Smith has been creating stunning looks for DeBose for nearly four years. However, this particular collaboration holds monumental significance as DeBose lends her voice to Disney's first Afro-Latina princess, Asha.

"We kept revisiting this idea, thinking about all the young girls of color who will see Ariana. So, what messages do we want them to receive? Most importantly, we want them to see themselves," explained Smith, emphasizing the importance of representation in the industry.

From a styling perspective, Smith aimed to showcase timeless ensembles that young girls could adore, drawing inspiration from the iconic looks of classic Disney heroines. Think wispy ballgowns, a silver power suit by Brunello Cucinelli, and a stunning botanical-patterned minidress from Aje.

Smith took his attention to detail a step further by collaborating with hairstylists Takisha Sturdivant-Drew and Araxi Lindsey to create different types of braids that would resonate with both African and Latina cultures. "We knew that this would be an immediate recognition point for our diverse audience," said Smith, highlighting the importance of cultural inclusivity.

As if the excitement surrounding "Wish" couldn't get any greater, its theatrical premiere on Thursday also aligns with Disney's 100-year anniversary. As a nod to this milestone, each look crafted for DeBose incorporates subtle elements that pay homage to the beloved franchise.

Ariana DeBose's journey as the voice of Disney's first Afro-Latina princess, Asha, is not just a press tour, but a profound statement of representation. With Zadrian Smith spearheading her styling with passion and purpose, DeBose's ensembles serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for young girls of color around the world.
